The origins of the festival

Following the destruction of the Second Temple (70 after the Christian era), the holidays are Recenter Alliance on the commemoration of the Sinai, the giving of the Torah and the Ten Commandments.
After leaving Egypt the Israelites headed to the land of Canaan, and after seven weeks before they came to Mount Sinai where they received the order to wash their clothes. The third day, in thunder and lightning, the Lord spoke to the people but, before the conduct of the nature and power of the voice of God, was terrified.
then Moses received from God the order to go alone on top of the mountain, where he remained forty days and forty nights to receive the two tablets of the Law, or more precisely, as the Hebrew text, "the two tablets of "The Decalogue.
The term commonly used, Ten Commandments, is inaccurate because the term that is in the Torah, "Ha-assereth dibberoth", the "ten words", the value assigned to it, rather, of messages.
But the people saw that Moses, after forty days had not yet returned, he was afraid of being abandoned and the gold received as a gift from the Egyptians, they built a golden calf in imitation of Egyptian deities worshiped by the latter .
Moses came down from Sinai, seeing the people abandon the worship of an idol, broke the Tablets of the Covenant considered unworthy to receive them.
But after that offenders were punished, and that the people had repented of his sin, God, the prayers of Moses, he announced his forgiveness with The term "Salachtì" I have forgiven him. And Moses rose again on Mount Sinai, again received the Tablets of the Covenant. (1)

Liturgy
the morning service we read the parashah which contains the Decalogue. During the day is read the book of Ruth, which connects to the harvest feast. The story of Ruth is very beautiful and poetic. Naomi and her two sons emigrated to Moab because of famine. The two sons married Moabite, but both die. Naomi decides to return to his homeland and Ruth, one of the daughters, go with her because, she says, "your land is my land, your God is my God." Pushed by the same mother-in-law, Ruth marries Boaz, possessing rich and distant relative of the family. According to the tradition of Ruth is the ancestor of King David, from whose lineage the Messiah will descend. (1)

Customs
The festival of Shavuot has no special commands. But there are minhagim (customs) they have established over the centuries (see How is the minhag? Jewish Culture at the site).
Synagogues are decorated with flowers and plants to remind us that at the time of the first fruits, with a strong reminder of the ceremonies of tenders at the time of the first fruits of the Temple.
There also used to meet the night of Shavuot to study Torah until dawn. This study, called Tiqoun (Repair) is to repair the weakness of those who did not have the strength to watch when the Lord made a gift of the Torah at Sinai. But this watch is waiting for the first time that the ancestors of Israel received the divine words. The origin of this custom is to be found in the Cabala of the sixteenth century. The aim is to relive the experience of Sinai in fire and joy. (2)
